Sannino: "Chievo did all we could"

Giuseppe Sannino notes Chievo did “what we could” against Roma and admits his job is in the balance.

“We did what we had to do and what we could do against a side like Roma. We leave with a negative result, but a positive performance,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-0 defeat.

“I think a team like ours will inevitably be more likely to make mistakes as the game wears on, because we have to be physically at 100 per cent to counter their technique.

“On the goal Nicolas Frey was a fraction of a second late on closing down Alessandro Florenzi and that’s all he needs.”

The Flying Donkeys were further dented by losing Cyril Thereau to an injury in the warm-up.

“Thereau? I judge the players who took part in the game and I believe they did very well. We struggle to create scoring opportunities, we know that, and I would like us to be more dangerous in attack. The lads have been extraordinary, though.”

Speculation escalates around Sannino’s position after a sixth consecutive defeat.

“I don’t talk about bad luck. We entered a vortex after the defeat to Juventus when we did well to shake off an incident that went against us. Since then, we’ve been paying for every little mistake.

“We must look at the result, but also the efforts of the Chievo players and their hard work rate. Even if I am a Coach who is up for debate, as I must be after eight defeats in 10 games, I still have to say it’s strange looking at the performances.

“It is normal for Chievo to consider their options, as they have been in Serie A for a long time and have many interests here. All I can say is that I am pleased with my work and leave the decision to those who need to make these choices.”

Garcia: "No time to celebrate"

Rudi Garcia praised Marco Borriello and Roma’s “fantastic streak” of 10 straight wins, but is keeping a lid on celebrations.

“First of all I want to say Chievo don’t deserve to be bottom of the table,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-0 victory.

“They played well and remained united, as a team. I said on Friday this could be our most difficult game and I was not wrong.

“At the moment we have few options on the bench in attack, but the important thing at the end of the day is to win.

“We brought the points home and it was important to make it 10 out of 10, as we saw yesterday Juventus and Napoli won while Inter and Fiorentina did not.”

Borriello had been expected to leave Roma this summer, but Garcia insisted on keeping him and he scored this evening.

“Borriello has the goal in his blood. I won’t forget how difficult it was today to play as a centre-forward, because he depends on the balls that get to him. Alessandro Florenzi’s arrived at its destination.

“Without Francesco Totti and Gervinho we are lacking something. We know Totti is unique and makes everyone play better, but I have an intelligent squad that knows how to adapt.

“If we dominated possession then it means the opponents had to run after the ball, so after an hour of that they tire and the spaces open up.”

However, Garcia ensured there will be no partying late into the night – he ordered the entire squad to eat dinner at the Stadio Olimpico after the match.

“We are having dinner here tonight to prepare for the next game in the best way possible. Am I keeping an eye on their diet? Of course!

“This is a fantastic streak for us, but we don’t have time to enjoy it too much. We have one day less than Torino to prepare for Sunday’s match, so every minute is important to recover and prepare.

“The joy we shared with our fans, that was the most important thing.”

On Halloween, Garcia was asked whether he was the Wizard of the Stadio Olimpico.

“I think we have 27 wizards, from Morgan De Sanctis to the captain and everyone in between. These players give their all and we saw again this team will never give up.”

Serie A Week 10: Did You Know?

Roma are the first team in history to win the opening 10 Serie A games of the season. In European Leagues they can still target Tottenham’s run of 11 in 1960-61, Ajax with 12 in 1995-96 and Benfica’s 23 wins in 1972-73.

Marco Borriello’s last Serie A goal for the Giallorossi was in a 3-1 home win over Sampdoria on May 22 2011. He came the club’s 11th different scorer this season. The Lupi netted 17 of their total 24 goals in the second half, while Parma’s Jonathan Biabiany remains the only player to have scored against them before seven clean sheets.

Chievo had been unbeaten against Roma in three meetings, including two victories, without conceding. A run of six straight defeats is their worst since November 2008.

Napoli have beaten Fiorentina 51 times in Serie A, more than any other club. Since a 2-1 defeat in January 2009, they earned three wins and two draws at the Stadio Franchi. Dries Mertens got his first Serie A goal and confirmed the Partenopei have found the target in each of their last six visits to Florence.

Kaka had not scored in a Milan jersey since a 2-0 win away to Fiorentina on May 31 2009. It was also his sixth past Lazio, second only to Reggina as targets go on seven in his career. Michael Ciani marked his debut Serie A strike, having already scored for Lazio in the Coppa Italia against Siena in December 2012.

Lazio have not beaten Milan at San Siro in Serie A since Paolo Maldini’s own goal sealed a 1-0 result in September 1989, followed by 10 draws and 14 defeats. In those encounters, the Rossoneri scored 42 goals and conceded 19.

Andrea Pirlo scored his 23rd direct free kick in Serie A, moving ahead of Alessandro Del Piero. Now only Sinisa Mihajlovic stands between Pirlo and the all-time record of 28.

Since joining in 2011-12, Arturo Vidal has been the top scorer at Juventus with 28 goals in all competition. Leonardo Bonucci’s last Serie A strike was in a 2-0 win at Palermo in April 2012. Catania have lost all five away games this season, while Juve won 11 of their last 12 League ties in Turin.

Inter haven’t conquered Bergamo since a 2-0 result in April 2008, managing just three draws (all and two losses. The Nerazzurri have scored in each of their last 16 visits to Bergamo, last firing blanks in a 1-0 defeat in 1991-92. Home and away, the Orobici are unbeaten against Inter in five. Stefano Colantuono hasn’t lost against Inter since a 2-1 at San Siro on December 23 2006, followed by two wins and five draws.

In the last five encounters, Atalanta’s goals have all been scored by Giacomo Bonaventura (two) and German Denis (seven). The last Atalanta player other than these two to find the net against Inter was Simone Tiribocchi in April 2010. Denis has put six goals past Inter in the last three games.

Ricky Alvarez has put three of his 10 Serie A goals past Atalanta, but Inter are the favourite victims of Denis with seven. Atalanta have now netted 100 goals past Inter in the top flight, but this was their first draw of the season.

Hellas Verona had never previously started a top flight campaign with five consecutive home victories and are unbeaten at the Bentegodi in 11 official games.

Parma have not won away to Genoa since 1994, managing just two draws and four losses. Antonio Mirante confirmed his status as a penalty specialist, saving 12 in all competition, 10 in Serie A. The last spot-kick he kept out was exactly a year ago, denying Francesco Totti in Parma 3-2 Roma on October 31 2012. Alberto Gilardino still scored his 163rd Serie A goal.

Livorno have not beaten Torino at home in the top flight since a 2-0 result in 1933-34. The Amaranto halted a run of four consecutive defeats, while Torino went up to three points from five rounds. This was Livorno’s 100thSerie A home stalemate. Emerson broke his Serie A duck at the age of 33.

Simone Zaza has scored three of Sassuolo’s four goals from open play this term, but received his first Serie A red card. Zaza’s last dismissal was in Crotone-Ascoli in April 2013, Serie B. Udinese finally won on their travels after four straight losses.

Bologna’s last League victory in Sardinia was 1-0 in December 1998, followed by three draws and four defeats. The Rossoblu were without a single victory until last week, but have now notched up two on the bounce. It was Cagliari’s second consecutive defeat and a sad way to mark Andrea Cossu’s 200th Serie A appearance. The last team to conquer the Stadio Sant’Elia was Lecce, 2-1 in February 2012.

HT: Chievo spoiling Roma record

Bottom of the table Chievo are so far holding out against Roma, ready to ruin a new Serie A record.

The Giallorossi had the opportunity to make history, as no team had ever won the opening 10 Serie A games of the season. Rudi Garcia’s men had already matched the nine in a row set by Juventus in 2005-06, but Francesco Totti, Gervinho and the suspended Douglas Maicon missed out. Chievo were bottom of the table after five straight defeats, Bostjan Cesar sat out a ban and Cyril Thereau wasn’t even on the bench due to a last-minute injury. However, they beat Roma twice last season.

Gennaro Sardo was just returning from suspension, but was booked for a very high foot that caught Dodo in the head.

Christian Puggioni punched away a fierce Kevin Strootman strike from distance, though Leandro Castan was booked and will be suspended for the next match with Torino.

Daniele De Rossi couldn’t keep his header on target, while Marquinho’s angled drive flashged wide and an Adem Ljajic cross-shot was charged down by Claiton dos Santos.

Belfodil and Moras lose appeals

Ishak Belfodil and Evangelos Moras will have to sit out their two-match bans after appeals were rejected.

The forward and defender clashed at the final whistle of Inter 4-2 Verona last week and were sent off by the referee.

Both Inter and Verona had lodged appeals against the two-match ban, but they were rejected by the Disciplinary Commission today.

They were found guilty of “a gravely intimidating attitude, grabbing an opposition player by the throat.”

Chiellini’s apology to Bergessio

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has apologised to Gonzalo Bergessio after his tackle on the Catania man resulted in a fractured fibula.

The Argentine picked up the break in the 4-0 loss at the Juventus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

“I wanted to publicly apologise to Bergessio for that foul that caused his injury,” the Italian noted on Twitter.

“I certainly made that challenge to win the ball, but he got there first and unfortunately I struck him on the leg.

“I am really sorry and I want to wish him a speedy recovery.”

While the challenge left Catania President Antonino Pulvirenti furious, the centre-forward has defended the stopper.

“These things happen,” responded the South American via the same social media. “He didn’t do it on purpose. All is well.”

Bergessio is set to be sidelined for around two or three months.

Catania’s Bergessio fractures fibula

Catania will be without striker Gonzalo Bergessio for at least two months after he sustained a fracture in the 4-0 loss at Juventus.

A challenge by Giorgio Chiellini on the Argentine resulted in a fractured fibula for the Stadio Massimino hitman.

Bergessio, who posted a picture of his X-rayed leg last night, is expected to be out for eight to 12 weeks.

He has scored one goal in nine games for far this season for the struggling Sicilian outfit.

Kaka: First Milan then Brazil

Kaka is hoping to use his summer return to Milan as a springboard for World Cup 2014 selection.

The Brazilian was netted on a free transfer from Real Madrid in late August and shined in the 1-1 draw with Lazio last night.

“I’m disappointed with the result,” he told Mediaset. “My goal could have been so much more important.

“I hope to score other goals which are worth three points.

“My form? I must still improve under certain aspects, but I’m happy with my evolution from my ‘debut’ at Torino to here.

“I thank Milan for this second opportunity and I want to do well in order to have a great World Cup in Brazil.”

Although the attacking midfielder impressed at San Siro, Milan were jeered after a result which leaves them in tenth place – already 13 points adrift of the Champions League zone.

“It is hard to imagine a Champions League without Milan in it, I certainly hope we qualify,” he added.

“The good thing is that there are still a lot of games to play and plenty to work on.”

Benitez: "Napoli had to defend"

Rafa Benitez praised Napoli’s defensive performance against Fiorentina, but wouldn’t comment on the refereeing.

The Partenopei earned a 2-1 victory in Florence, but Juan Cuadrado was sent off in stoppages for simulation when he should’ve been awarded a penalty.

“Was this the right result? It was an important game, we brought out the character and didn’t just play with the ball, but also very well defensively,” Benitez told Sky Sport Italia.

“The penalty? We can talk for half-an-hour about this incident or the one on Dries Mertens, but I didn’t discuss the penalty against Roma either.

“The refereeing designators will decide whether the official made the right decisions or not. I prefer to talk about football.

“The squad is the key for us. If we are to target the Scudetto with Roma and Juventus, then we have to make the most of every player available to us. We don’t have their experience, so that needs to improve.

“Everyone is important for us, Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon. Gonzalo Higuain was meant to play between the lines, as we knew that we’d have to focus on the counter-attack tonight.”

Petkovic: "Lazio could"ve won"

Vladimir Petkovic maintains Lazio “deserved to win” in their 1-1 draw with Milan, though they took a while to get going.

“Did we need Milan to take the lead in order for us to react? It shouldn’t be that way, but it did look like it,” confessed the Coach in his Press conference.

“We deserved to win at the end, though. I am not satisfied, as we need to face games with more determination. We allowed Milan the initiative in the first half, but the second was the complete opposite.

“Milan have a lot of quality and when they are able to play to their strengths any team will struggle against them.

“After the equaliser we improved and should’ve finished the evening with a victory. We lack that extra 10 per cent of determination away from home to win.”

Hernanes was again disappointing in midfield and substituted at half-time, fuelling reports he’s set for a January exit.

“A player alone can’t do anything if the team isn’t working well,” argued Petkovic.

“I saw Hernanes looking a little down, so I preferred to introduce Eddy Onazi and give us more pace.

“Does this result make my position more solid? I never had the feeling my bench was shaky. The team has always been with me and I with them. In the second half we saw a team that believes in the project.

“If the team had not believed, then they would not have reacted that way.”

ADV: "Cuadrado decision inexplicable"

Fiorentina President Andrea Della Valle was furious after the defeat to Napoli, but hopes the referee “can grow and learn from this.”

The Viola were beaten 2-1 at the Stadio Franchi this evening, but at the 91st minute Juan Cuadrado was sent off for simulation when replays show he deserved a penalty.

“When I come to speak to the media, it is to reaffirm certain concepts. Firstly I have to praise Fiorentina for their performance, which was even better than the one to beat Juventus 4-2,” a visibly livid Della Valle told Sky Sport Italia.

Not only did Fiorentina not get the penalty, but Cuadrado will also be suspended against Milan on Saturday.

“The squad is improving, but injuries and other situations have temporarily changed our ambitions.

“This referee is young, but at the 91st minute I need someone to explain to me why they didn’t give that penalty. Maybe he’s a bit young and inexperienced, so lacked courage.

“We made a mistake against Parma and dropped two points. Since then the team has grown and matured. I therefore want to tell the referee that errors like this can also help him to improve and mature. We always talk about absolute faith in the officials, of course.”

When the pundits in the studio questioned the penalty awarded to Fiorentina against Napoli for a push on Stefan Savic, ADV lost his temper.

“Was the first penalty generous? He had an arm in his back, so it was entirely possible to give that penalty. How can you possibly say that it’s not a penalty?

“The message I want to send out amid the anger that is whirling round the city, especially with what happened last season, is that this is a very strong team we are all very proud of.

“Napoli, who are a great team, were pegged back for the entire second half. I will have to be cool-headed over the next few days, as the lads will be very angry. We fall further away from the top sides now, but hopefully we’ll catch up from this weekend.”

Montella: "Viola aren"t victims"

Vincenzo Montella refused to blame the referee after Fiorentina’s defeat to Napoli. “I told the team not to act like victims.”

The Viola were beaten 2-1 at home with Juan Cuadrado sent off for simulation in stoppages when he was clearly kicked by Gokhan Inler.

Not only were Fiorentina denied a penalty, but Cuadrado will also be suspended for Saturday’s showdown with Milan.

“It’s a shame, but if we just focus on one incident then we ignore a great performance from Fiorentina,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

“I am extremely satisfied with the way we played, the fact we pinned Napoli back and forced them to focus only on counter-attacks.

“We knew they were good at counters and they were better than us in those instances. We didn’t make mistakes as such and must credit our opponents with their talents.

“I told the team they mustn’t act like victims, but instead realise this is the path we must keep going on in order to find success.

“We had several chances and the fact we put this Napoli on the ropes means we have a lot of quality. We mustn’t just look at the result, as this was over 95 minutes probably Fiorentina’s best performance of the season.

“Mario Gomez will almost certainly be back after the break for international duty. He is a player who is beyond the norm, so we hope he gets back soon.

“At the same time, we have the current Capocannoniere Giuseppe Rossi, so the team is doing very well even without him.”

Cannavaro blamed for Higuain injury!

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis publicly blamed Paolo Cannavaro for causing Gonzalo Higuain’s head injury.

The patron was chatting to fans at a university in Rome and perhaps did not realise he was being filmed on a cameraphone.

The footage (see video below) found its way to retenews24.it and shows De Laurentiis blaming his captain – who has barely played this season – for the nasty head injury Higuain suffered at the start of his Napoli career.

“Cannavaro? Higuain had just arrived, so what does Cannavaro do? What happened was that **** Cannavaro hired a boat and took Higuain to Capri.

“There was no proper guide, so he took him diving right over the rocks.”

Higuain required 10 stitches to his face after hitting the rocks in August.

Sources from within Napoli have said it was ‘simply a joke.’

Alvarez: "Inter can"t keep leads"

Ricky Alvarez scored in Bergamo, but was frustrated with Inter’s 1-1 draw. “We don’t keep hold of our leads.”

The Argentine opened the scoring against the run of play, but Atalanta earned a point with German Denis.

“We played well and Atalanta are a good side,” Alvarez told Sky Sport Italia.

“We need to be smarter, though. Once we went in front, we were unable to keep hold of the lead. That is what we were missing against Torino and Cagliari too.

“In every game we take the lead, but don’t tend to keep hold of it. Anyone who wants to fight for the Scudetto has to be able to do that and so far we’ve failed.

“Today we leave with a bitter taste in our mouths.”

Colantuono: "Draw the right result"

Atalanta Coach Stefano Colantuono was “satisfied” with the point against Inter and believes a draw “was the right result.”

The Orobici fought back from a Ricky Alvarez opener with the German Denis header in Bergamo for a 1-1 draw.

“I am satisfied, as we did slightly better in the first half and in all honesty fell back in the second, as Inter force you to use up a lot of energy,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“At the start we couldn’t figure out how to counter Mateo Kovacic’s position. I was very undecided as to my tactical system, but didn’t want to send a different signal after our defeat to Sampdoria.

“Then Franco Brienza picked up an injury this morning and I had no more doubts. We gave more intensity to our play with Maxi Moralez to go on the counter and have a man on Esteban Cambiasso.

“As for the goal, I wouldn’t blame Walter Samuel for the marking. When German jumps like that it becomes difficult for any defender.”

Mazzarri: "Inter deserved win"

Walter Mazzarri thinks Inter dropped two points in their 1-1 draw with Atalanta. “We deserved to win.”

The Nerazzurri took the lead against the run of play with Ricky Alvarez, then German Denis equalised. The second half was more in the hands of the visitors, who hit the woodwork with Mauro Icardi.

“In my view we deserved to win,” Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“If you look at the scoring opportunities, then we created more than Atalanta this evening, especially in the second half. We need to be more clinical and sharp in attack.

“We also have to improve our attitude and score more goals in this period that we’re missing Diego Milito. We were naive to give away a goal when in front. We have many aspects to improve upon in order to battle for the top spots.

“Atalanta are a strong side and I complimented Stefano Colantuono. Denis is one of the best centre-forwards in Italy. He didn’t play that much for me at Napoli, but when he did he was always ready. Now he has consistency, regular playing time and therefore more goals.”

Samir Handanovic went off at half-time after clutching his right hip in pain, while the slippery pitch made life difficult for many of the players.

“Handanovic just had a nasty knock, so it shouldn’t be serious, but he told me couldn’t continue,” explained Mazzarri.

“It was absurd in a Serie A game to see everyone slipping over so much. It looked like an amateur League.

“We were also tired, as we used up so much energy against Verona on Saturday that we couldn’t press the same way as usual. We ran out of steam as time went on.”

Mazzarri also outlined why he is now using Mateo Kovacic in the support role, moving Ricky Alvarez into midfield.

“Because Ricky runs more and also gives more guarantees when defending. Mateo did very well, but he seems to struggle physically.”

Guidolin: "Udinese didn"t deserve to lose"

Francesco Guidolin insists Udinese did not deserve defeat to Roma and promises a “battle” royal against Sassuolo.

The Friulani lost 1-0 on Sunday, ending their 22-match unbeaten home run in Serie A.

“We know football and that behind a negative result there is often a positive performance,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We played a very good game against the Giallorossi, the defeat was unfair, but now we have to concentrate on Sassuolo.

“I’ve been through a lot in my career and know the atmosphere you feel at a newly-promoted club. They conquered Serie A for the first time and want to hold on tight, so we must be ready for battle.”

Maurizio Domizzi is available again after his injury problems.

Udinese squad for Sassuolo: Benussi, Brkic, Kelava; Basta, Bubnjic, Danilo, Domizzi, Douglas, Gabriel Silva, Haurtaux, Naldo, Widmer; Allan, Badu, Bruno Fernandes, Lazzari, Merkel, Jadson, Pereyra, Pinzi; Di Natale, Muriel, Nico Lopez, Ranegie

Donadoni: Changes will be made

Parma Coach Roberto Donadoni has admitted he will make changes to the XI for their game against Genoa tomorrow.

The Crociati go into the match at the Marassi off the back of a famous 3-2 win over Milan at the weekend, but the tactician has conceded that there will be a few alterations to the team.

“Some things will be changed tomorrow,” he told reporters. “But I’ll evaluate that tonight.

“Cassano on the bench? Let’s see how he feels. He took a blow to the head against Milan – so we’ll see.

“We have a lot of options in this squad though – that’s something that I really like about this team.

“It’s going to be a complicated match against Genoa, so we can’t go into the match and try to take things easy.”

Fiorentina will be tough, says Benitez

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez expects his side to be tested by Fiorentina when the two teams meet in Tuscany on Wednesday.

“They are a difficult side to take on,” the Spaniard noted this morning. “We will have to keep an eye on Juan Cuadrado, but we will not be man-marking him.

“It is a game that is worth three points like all the others, but it is a significant game as it is between two sides who are high in the standings.

“They are good in possession and they can score goals in numerous ways. We too keep hold of the ball so we’ll have to wait and see who controls the game.

“But the defensive side of the match will be important too.”

Fiorentina are joint fourth in the standings, four points behind Napoli and Juventus – a side they beat 4-2 recently. But Roma are top after nine wins from nine.

“We’ve had a positive start to the season. We have won seven, drawn one and lost one. We’ll see where we end up.

“Roma? I said that there were four or five sides who could win the Scudetto at the start of the season.

“Roma were one of those and they will win the championship if they continue like this. But the pressure will mount on them.”

Gonzalo Higuain was the hero in the 2-0 win over Torino at the weekend, but it is unclear whether the Argentine will start at the Franchi.

“Higuain is returning from injury and he did well against Torino, but he’s still recovering. I have to look at the players on a game by game basis.”

Benitez was also asked to comment on his inclusion on the 10-man shortlist for the FIFA 2013 World Coach of the Year award.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean that we are the best. Nevertheless, Jupp Heynckes should get the award. He won a lot last season with Bayern Munich and is an example as a professional.”

A Juventus date for Trezeguet

David Trezeguet will return to Juventus in December to salute the fans he never got a chance to say goodbye to.

The Frenchman, the club’s most prolific foreign player thanks to 171 goals in 320 games, left the Old Lady for Hercules in August 2010.

“As promised, I will be in Turin on 14 December,” the man who Luciano Moggi signed from Monaco in 2000 stated.

“It will be an important occasion for me since I have a strong bond with the club and, above all, I want to see all you fans again.

“I will be at the stadium to celebrate with you.”

The striker, now with Newell’s Old Boys after a spell at River Plate, is set to walk out on to the pitch at the Juventus Stadium during half-time of the Juve-Sassuolo tie.

"Inter showed grit & determination"

Inter defender Jonathan has praised his Nerazzurri teammates after they showed ‘grit and determination’ this weekend.

The Milanese side beat Verona on Saturday evening, and now face Atalanta tomorrow looking to put pressure on third place Juventus.

“We showed a real grit and determination,” he told FutNet. “It was a good win for us.

“We want to share the success with the fans, who have supported us all the time through thick and thin.

“The result wills us on to work harder and try to close in on a Champions League place.

“We have plenty of confidence going into the Atalanta game. We know they are a quality opponent, but we want to win.”

Balotelli unhurt after crash

Sky Sport Italia have confirmed that Mario Balotelli is unhurt after it was revealed that he was involved in a car accident earlier today.

The striker crashed his vehicle in Brescia after he left training this afternoon, but the station have revealed that the Milan forward is okay.

The Italy international swapped insurance details with the other motorist, and both went on their way.

It will be good news for Coach Massimiliano Allegri after Matias Silvestre was revealed as the latest player to be injured for the Rossoneri this term.

Badu: Congratulations Roma

Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has congratulated Roma after the capital club beat his Udinese side 1-0 on Sunday.

Michael Bradley scored late on to maintain the Giallorossi’s 100 per cent record this term, and the midfielder has admitted that the defeat ‘hurt’.

“I thought we played a great game,” he told reporters. “We did well, and I thought we were unlucky to have conceded with eight minutes to go.

“We fought hard to try and equalise, but, obviously, we couldn’t do it.

“You have to congratulate Roma for their win, even if it hurts to lose at home in front of your own fans.

“Now we have to overcome that disappointment and think about the next game against Sassuolo.”

Crespo & Cech doubts for Bologna

Bologna play Cagliari on Wednesday, but could do so without Juan Angel Crespo and Marek Cech.

The Rossoblu won their first game of the season at the weekend, with the Spaniard getting on the scoresheet against Livorno.

However, Stefano Pioli may well have to do without the defender, who is struggling to make the trip with a muscle injury.

Cech is also in doubt having missed today’s training session with a similar ailment.

Hamsik: Focus on Fiorentina

Marek Hamsik has claimed that Napoli had ‘no trouble’ beating Torino, but has now turned his attention to Fiorentina.

The Partenopei beat Il Toro 2-0 on Sunday thanks to two controversial penalties from Gonzalo Higuain.

But the Slovakian forward has insisted that his men are now fully focused on beating the Viola.

“We won thanks to two penalties,” he told reporters. “But after that I think we controlled the game.

“We didn’t have any trouble securing the points.

“We have a tight run of fixtures coming up now, so we have to be ready for each challenge.”

Albiol enjoying life in Naples

Raul Albiol has reflected on his first few months in Serie A with Napoli, and has admitted that he wants to do well enough for a World Cup place.

The Spain international joined the Partenopei from Real Madrid in the summer, and has conceded that he has settled in well at Stadio San Paolo.

“I am really happy in Serie A,” he told TVE. “It is a great experience playing for Napoli.

“I’m really settling in well here. I’m want to try and be the best player I can possibly be, and help Napoli win.

“Benitez was an important part of me coming here, and then Callejon and Higuain came as well.

“At the moment I am thinking about doing well with Napoli, but it is normal to be thinking about the World Cup.”

Colantuono archives Inter memories

Atalanta boss Stefano Colantuono has told his troops to forget their past success against Inter ahead of Tuesday’s tie.

The Bergamo boys have a decent home record against the Milanese giants – seeing as they have won 14 and drawn 18 in 53 top-flight games.

They beat Inter 3-2 in the corresponding fixture last term.

“We should forget about the victories against Inter in the past,” Colantuono noted. “It will be very complicated against the Nerazzurri.

“It will be a very difficult encounter against a determined side. They are well fielded by boss Walter Mazzarri and they never give up.

“Everyone of their players can be dangerous – especially people like Esteban Cambiasso, Fredy Guarin and Rodrigo Palacio – but they have a great squad.”

Atalanta had won three on the bounce, but they lost 1-0 at Sampdoria on Saturday evening.

“We played a good first half at Sampdoria, but we should have taken advantage of the opportunities that we had in the tie.

“Then, in the second half, Sampdoria decided the game in the space of the first 10 minutes.”

De Sanctis eyes clean sheet record

Roma may have won nine games from nine, but goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis is eyeing a record of his own.

The Giallorossi have conceded just one goal in Serie A this term and that came in Week 3 during the 3-1 win at Parma.

Since that Jonathan Biabiany header, goalkeeper De Sanctis has gone 591 minutes without picking the ball out of his net.

The Roma club record for most minutes in Serie A without conceding belongs to Ivan Pelizzoli and dates back to the 2003-04 season. He went 774 minutes unbeaten.

De Sanctis is thus just over two games away from putting his name in the record books. Roma will face Chievo and Torino in their next two matches.

Chiellini hails aggressive Juventus

Giorgio Chiellini is delighted that the real Juventus turned up in the 2-0 win over Genoa on Sunday.

The Old Lady have had a problematic start to the season and went into the Rossoblu tie following defeats at Fiorentina and Real Madrid.

“We analysed everything over the past few days and saw that certain things could have gone differently,” the centre-back commented.

“But I can say that I saw the right spark in Madrid and today we once again saw another Juventus, ruthless and aggressive, just as the Coach wants.

“We started with the right anger, the right aggression and swarmed Genoa in the first half. Only an inspired Mattia Perin performance [in goal] prevented us from adding to our tally.

“It was a true Juve performance. Now we’ll be confident in approaching Wednesday’s game against Catania.”

The Old Lady have dropped just five points in Serie A this season, but they remain adrift of leaders Roma who have a 100 per cent record after nine games.

Lopez rues missed opportunities

Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez admits Miroslav Klose “changed the game in Lazio’s favour” for a 2-0 victory.

“Klose changed the game in Lazio’s favour,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think we played well and especially in the first half created more scoring opportunities. We did what we set out to do and Lazio left us some space to run into, but we were unable to take those chances.

“In the second half the match changed with Klose’s introduction and two goals. The penalty hurt us, as it came so soon after the first goal and knocked the wind out of our sails.

“Andrea Cossu is an important player for us, but he’s coming off an injury, so we can’t let him play three games in a week. I preferred to rest him ahead of the meeting with Bologna.”

When asked if Cagliari struggle more on their travels, Lopez pointed to the constant travelling due to the stadium situation.

“We’ve been playing ‘away from home’ for a year! We approach all games the same way, no matter where we are playing, but incidents went against us today.”

The Sardinians finally returned to the Stadio Sant’Elia last week for the first time since April 2012.

Serie A Week 9: Did You Know?

Roma become only the second ever club to win their first nine Serie A games, matching the record set by Fabio Capello’s Juventus in 2005-06. Including last season, the Lupi have won 10 in a row and are close to matching the club record 11 set by Luciano Spalletti in 2005-06.

Roma and Inter have 23 goals after nine rounds, a record since three points were introduced for a win in 1994-95. Only Lazio (1999-00), Milan (2002-03) and Juventus (2003-04) have managed it. The Giallorossi conceded one goal in the opening nine games, also achieved by Cagliari and Inter in 1966-67.

Udinese had been unbeaten at the Stadio Friuli in 22 top flight encounters. The last side to leave here with three points was Juventus, 4-1 on September 2 2012, followed by 14 wins and eight stalemates. They hadn’t even conceded here for 281 minutes of football. Douglas Maicon hadn’t seen red in all competition since Bologna 1-3 Inter in November 2009. Michael Bradley’s last Serie A goal was in Roma 2-0 Atalanta in October 2012, so now he has three.

The Giallorossi have scored in all but one of their last 17 visits to Udine, aside from a 2-0 defeat in November 2011. Their top flight record here is now 36 wins, 23 draws and 20 losses.

Parma notched up a third straight home win, but it was only the second victory over Milan – home and away – in their last 19 meetings, along with four draws and 13 defeats. The other success was 1-0 in 2010. Marco Parolo has been directly involved in Parma’s last five Serie A goals, scoring three and providing two assists. This was his first career brace, going up to 14 in the top flight. Antonio Cassano took his Serie A tally to 98 and scored for the third round running.

Matias Silvestre became the first Milan player to score with a header since Bojan Krkic in a 2-1 win over Siena on January 6 2013. It was the defender’s 13th Serie A goal, the most recent being in Palermo 4-4 Chievo in May 2012. Alessandro Matri got his first goal of the campaign, the 64th in Serie A, where he hadn’t scored since Atalanta 0-1 Juventus on May 8. The Rossoneri are without a victory on their travels this season between Serie A and Champions League, managing four draws and three defeats. Cristian Zapata marked his 200th Serie A game.

For the first time in the post-War era, Milan have failed to garner more than 11 points by Week 9 for two seasons running (calculating three points for a win).

Esteban Cambiasso has scored three goals in the last six rounds, but it was Rolando’s first in Serie A. Cambiasso now has 40 Serie A goals, 50 in a Nerazzurri jersey. Rodrigo Palacio went up to 53 in Serie A, three in the last two games, and helped Inter end their three-round winless streak. Inter hadn’t netted two in the opening 15 minutes of a top flight match since January 2011 against Cesena. The Nerazzurri have now found the net with 10 different players, a season record on a par with Roma and Fiorentina.

Verona have never won at San Siro, whether against Milan or Inter, managing 25 draws and 24 defeats. Hellas hadn’t conceded four top flight goals since a 5-4 defeat to Lazio in April 2002. Their three-game winning streak came to an end. Raphael Martinho got his second Serie A goal, while two of Romulo’s four in the top flight were scored away to Inter.

This was the first Juventus home clean sheet of the season. Genoa have won away to Juventus only twice, in 1937 and 1991, drawing nine and losing the other 38. However, they had been unbeaten at the Juventus Stadium, earning two consecutive draws. Gian Piero Gasperini’s record against the Bianconeri is one win, two draws and seven losses. With eight points, this is Genoa’s worst start since 1994-95, when they were relegated. Arturo Vidal converted his fifth consecutive penalty between Serie A and Champions League, while Carlos Tevez found the net for the second week running.

Napoli had not received any penalties this season until getting two against Torino. Now only Inter, Catania, Sassuolo, Chievo, Atalanta and Parma are without a spot-kick. Gonzalo Higuain becomes the first Partenopei player with two Serie A penalties in a single game since Maurizio Domizzi against Juventus in 2007.

The Granata had put together four draws and a defeat at the San Paolo between Serie A and B, so this was their first defeat since 1-0 in April 1996. Giampiero Ventura has only ever beaten the Partenopei once (in the 1995 Coppa Italia with Lecce), along with four draws and 11 defeats.

The Partenopei extended their unbeaten home run in Serie A to 15 games, including 12 victories, the best streak since October 1991. Gonzalo Higuain’s last brace was for Real Madrid against Mallorca in March 2013, while he hadn’t scored for Napoli since September 22 against Milan. The Partenopei have netted six times in the opening 15 minutes, making them stronger starters than any other side. Rafa Benitez has fielded nine different starting line-ups in as many League games.

Chievo suffered a fifth consecutive defeat (their worst run since September 2012) and a third on the trot at home (which hadn’t happened since five in a row in December 2008). Juan Guillermo Cuadrado bagged his first ever Serie A brace, going up to 10 goals. Bostjan Cesar had not scored in Serie A since Lazio 1-1 Chievo on February 6 2011, while his most recent Bentegodi goal was in Chievo 2-1 Cesena in October 2010. His tally now stands at four career goals. Giuseppe Sannino has never beaten the Viola, managing two points from six attempts.

Miroslav Klose scored only his second goal of the season, the other against Juventus on August 31, going up to 30 in Serie A. However, he had never before netted as a substitute in Italy. Antonio Candreva has scored four goals in nine Serie A games this term, as many as he had managed in the previous 33 rounds. He also made the Sardinians his favourite targets with three and converted his fifth consecutive spot-kick. Cagliari have lost their last four consecutive visits to the Olimpico. Lazio ended their run of four draws from five games in all competition. The Aquile are unbeaten in their opening five home matches, the best run since 2005-06 when that streak went to 12.

Sampdoria kept their first clean sheet of the campaign, having let goals in for the last 17 consecutive Serie A games, and their first home win. They hadn’t notched up two straight victories since March. Atalanta have picked up nine red cards in 2013, more than any other club in the top five European Leagues. Samp haven’t drawn at home with Atalanta in all competition since a 1-1 in 1989, managing 12 Blucerchiati victories and five for the Orobici. Shkodran Mustafi celebrated his first Serie A goal at the 23rd attempt.

New Catania Coach Gigi De Canio has only ever won once on his mid-season debut, in 1998 with Pescara in Serie B, earning three draws and four defeats. Sassuolo kept their first ever Serie A clean sheet, having conceded 22 goals in eight rounds. Simone Missiroli marked his 100th top flight appearance.

Bologna finally registered their first win of the campaign after five defeats and three draws. The Rossoblu hadn’t picked up three points at the Dall’Ara since a 3-0 over Cagliari in March, followed by five draws and four losses. Jose Angel Crespo scored his debut Serie A goal at the 10th appearance. Livorno have scraped just two points from the last six rounds. They’ve won only one of their 15 top flight visits to Bologna, 2-1 in 1942, along with two draws and 12 defeats.
